Department of Theatre, Chung Ang University, Republic of Korea
The Department of Theatre at Chung-Ang University was established in 1959 as the first four-year institution of theatrical education in Korea. The alumni of the department now pursue careers in various fields such as Theatre, film, TV, musical, and are successfully representing the cultural arts of Korea. It maintains its reputation as the most prestigious department of performing arts in Korea. In 2003, the university was awarded first place in National Comparative Assessment of Theatre Arts, which was evaluated in 5 different categories - Professor, teaching environment, undergraduates, facilities and approval ratings.
In 2006, the theatre department established the International Conference of Cultural Arts and Theatre Festivals for Universities from Korea, China and Japan.
In 2008 the department successfully hosted the IFTR (International Federation for Theatre Research), which involved 280 participants from 34 countries, captivating the attention of Theatre scholars around the world.
Chung-Ang University is an active founding member of both ATEC (Asia Theatre Education Centre) and WTEA (World Theatre Education Alliance). In 2018, the Department of Theatre, together with ATEC, held the 5th Asia Theatre University Festival with the 3rd World Theatre Education Convention, the largest theatre university festivals in Asia, to actively promote international exchanges such as joint theatre production, joint workshops, and student exchanges with leading theatre universities abroad, such as the California Institute of the Arts and Texas State University.
